Funds of knowledge is an important piece to approaching students and getting to have students engage in their learning and writing. It is a term used to refer "to the historically accumulated and culturally developed bodies of knowledge and skills." People pull from these in every day, mundane times, but also in academic settings. Funds of knowledge can help combat detrimental thinking that students may bring with them.
I Lost My Tooth in Africa a mentor text that can be taken to evoke funds of knowledge and lead to rich writing pulling from experiences of the students.
1. Open sourced media through creative commons is yet another tool to use, with limitations. The type of work that one can find may not be of the best quality, but it does shows students how to find images/ videos that are fair use. How I would integrate this into my classroom technology instruction, is the question I have to think about in more depth.
2. I just copyrighted my demo page and wonder if it will really be protected. I like the idea of having a tool to at least use if my work ever gets stolen and used in a big way.
3. NCTE
A great document to keep in mind when thinking about fair use. The codes for best practices should be shared with all educators.
